Paweł Kukiz, an independent candidate for the presidency who polled third with over 20 percent in Sunday’s ballot, has said that he will not be backing either incumbent Bronisław Komorowski or Law and Justice’s Andrzej Duda in the second round of voting billed for 24 May.

However, he told Polish Radio on Tuesday that he intends to create a citizens’ movement in the wake of the election.

“My aim was not to become president, but it would have been great if I did take the position, because it would have been a lot easier to make changes to the constitution,” Kukiz said.

Paweł Kukiz said that his main goal was to bring down the current Polish political system and to make changes to the constitution with regards to single-mandate constituencies.

The musician added that he does not intend to form a political party, but is keen on forming a citizens’ movement.

“One of the negative effects of [party hegemony] is a lack of generational change,” Kukiz said, adding that his movement will be loosely based on the tactics employed by the AWS Solidarity Electoral Action, a 1990s centre-right party whose members came from wide-ranging backgrounds. (jb)
