Thursday's debate was broadcast on TVN, with three journalists asking the candidates questions ranging from economic policy to foreign affairs.

“Is [Russian] President Putin a threat to Poland?”

Bronisław Komorowski: You cannot set yourself up as an enemy of Russia. One cannot fail to notice that Russia started the confrontation with the entire Western world. Poland should operate as part of the Western world and function within that framework. Russia is safe for Poland when it resigns from its imperial aspirations and aims to reform.

Andrzej Duda: Poles need peace and quiet. Poland should pursue an offensive foreign policy. They should pursue effective policies. Such a policy is insisting that international institutions interact with Russia. Poland must be first to show the initiative. We should be firm in our NATO structures.

“Should Poland help Poles pay off foreign-policy loans?”

Bronisław Komorowski: Loans should be taken out at your own risk. The idea is to protect some groups, for example families not to lose their homes. The rest must be an agreement between the banks and the borrowers.

Andrzej Duda: You have no idea what it means to perform the duties of a president. […] The state should help Swiss franc-mortgage holders. A change in mentality is required. It is also necessary to slowly 'repolonise' banks.

Social media has already judged a winner in the debate.

The second round of the presidential election will take place on Sunday 24 May. (rg)
