The State Electoral Commission (PKW) has announced that the election silence in Sunday’s second round of the presidential ballot is to end at 10.30pm.

The PKW said that due to a 90-minute break taken by the district commission in Kowale in the Skoczów municipality near Cieszyn, southern Poland, election silence had to be extended.

Voting officers in Skoczów had to announce a pause in election proceedings after a voter died in the polling station.

“We heard news that an ‘extraordinary event’ happened in Kowale, Cieszyn county, where at 5.35pm an 80-year-old lady suddenly weakened and despite an ambulance being called out immediately, she died in the polling station,” Sylwester Marciniak from PKW informed at a special press conference.

The extension to the election silence means exit polls will not be announced until after 10.30pm.

Meanwhile, all other polling stations in Poland closed on time. (jb)
