Admitting defeat, Komorowski told his supporters that “democracy is about accepting and respecting the electoral verdict”.

“I would like to thank my rival Andrzej Duda and I wish him a successful presidency,” Komorowski said after the result of the exit poll gave Komorowski 47 percent to Duda’s 53 percent.

“It didn’t work out this time, and that is the will of the citizens of a free and democratic Poland,” underlined the incumbent.

Meanwhile, sociologist from Warsaw University, Maciej Gdula told the PAP news agency that the election result is a sign of voter fatigue with the ruling Civic Platform party.

“Duda didn’t win the elections, rather Komorowski lost them,” Gdula said, adding that “Duda did not present himself as a great visionary […] or as a ‘large-format’ politican, but rather as someone who is younger and more active, being able to use criticism of Civic Platform to beat the president”.

Gdula also underlined that Komorowski’s loss was thanks to the his poor campaign. The president “started from a very high rating yet he managed to squander all his support”. (jb)
