“These figures only concern driving licences lost for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km per hour in built-up areas,” commented police spokesman Mariusz Sokołowski.

The largest number of culprits were stopped in Warsaw and its outskirts (115 drivers), followed by the Wielkopolska region (72) and Silesia (50).

Sokołowski noted that under the tighter laws, licences were also revoked for drivers caught carrying too many passengers.

The new regulations are designed to combat Poland's poor record in road safety. The country has been repeatedly ranked among the worst offenders in Europe in terms of annual road deaths.

“A third of people killed on the roads are indeed pedestrians,” Sokołowski noted, stressing the danger of driving fast in built-up areas. (nh)
