Speaking to journalists on Friday, Dziwisz – who used to be Pope John Paul II’s private secretary – said that apart from attending the World Youth Day in Kraków, Pope Francis is also expected to visit Częstochowa (the site of the Jasna Góra monastery), Warsaw, Wadowice (Pope John Paul II’s birthplace) and Oświęcim, the site of the Nazi German Auschwitz concentration camp.

Cardinal Dziwisz underlined that the plans have yet to be officially finalised, stating, however, that the Pontiff’s visit to Auschwitz will be of a private nature.

Pope Francis is set to come to Poland for the World Youth Day – an event for young Catholics – which is to be held in Kraków between 26-31 July next year.

According to estimates, up to 600,000 Catholics are to take part in the initial ceremony welcoming Pope Francis, while one million are expected to take part in Friday’s ceremony marking the Way of the Cross.

Meanwhile, as many as two million Catholic youths are expected to attend the culminating Mass near Wieliczka. (jb)
