Civic Platform rethinks strategy ahead of autumn election

Members of the ruling Civic Platform (PO) convened in the village of Jachranka near Warsaw on Tuesday to discuss the party’s future ahead of the parliamentary election this autumn.

After the meeting, PO members told media that there were no “beheadings” following the party’s first election defeat in eight years, and that the party is discounting any move to the left or right.
One of the matters discussed raised the issue of the planned referendum on 6 September on three issues: single-mandate constituencies, tax reform and the liquidation of party sponsorship from the state coffers.
Speaking to journalists following the gathering, head of PO’s parliamentary caucus Rafał Grupiński said that “PM [Ewa Kopacz] proposed a number of plans for the future, but we will disclose them in greater detail during the next policy convention on 20 June”.
Grupiński informed that Kopacz is also set to announce who will be leading PO’s election campaign, with the front-runners for the position said to be either former MEP Sławomir Nitras or Europe minister Rafał Trzaskowski.
The PO club’s head said that the party is ready “to fight for the vote of every Pole”, with emphasis put on how to regain voter confidence in rural areas, where PO has traditionally fared worse than conservative rivals Law and Justice. (jb)
