Speaking at a press conference in the city of Nowa Sól in western Poland, Beata Szydło, the candidate of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) for the position of PM, chose a dilapidated building as a background.

She spoke about the failure of the governing Civic Platform (PO) to develop the region.

“We are a nation which has a lot or wealth in terms of raw materials, and we do not make use of it. We are [...] very quick to shake off something which could be our potential,” Szydło said, adding that Nowa Sól is an example of this attitude.

“Pity she did not speak in front of the fast-developing [parts of the] city, as it would negate the false thesis by politicians of [the PiS] party that Poland is in ruins,” said Wadim Tyszkiewicz, who sympathises with the NowoczesnaPL pro-market political grouping. (rg/rk)
