The boy was lying on a pillow on a pavement in front of the entrance to a property on a housing estate of detached houses,” commented police spokesman Artur Kurczaba.

An ambulance was called and the child was rushed to intensive care.

The baby is understood to be in a stable condition, although doctors say the child was cold on discovery and it had been born slightly prematurely.

Police are currently trying to determine the identity of the child's mother.

Surveillance cameras on the adjacent housing estate may prove helpful in this matter. (nh)
