Soldiers and officers' wages will see rises in 2016, Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

In 2016 the Defence Ministry will be allocated an additional PLN 340 million (about EUR 80 million) and the Ministry of Interior about PLN 390 million more than in 2015, Siemoniak said.

"It is with great satisfaction that I convey the message that within the budget of the defence minister for 2016 there will be a rise in wages and salaries of PLN 340 million, of which PLN 215 million will be used to increase the salaries of professional soldiers and officers and PLN 125 million to increase the salaries of military personnel," the defence minister said.

Minister of Internal Affairs Teresa Piotrowska said that her ministry and the departments reporting to them will be allocated an extra PLN 390 million.

"This will lift the average salary for the officer by about four percent, and the civil servant by about six percent," she said.

The rises are far above inflation, although not as much as unions had been asking for. (jh/rk)
