The Polish capital's taxi drivers took to the city's thoroughfares in a snail-paced protest in the morning hours of Thursday.

A fleet of some 2,000 cars is expected to take part in the demonstration held against unfair competition from unlicensed carriers driving down prices.

Taxi operators demand greater state control over the black-market transport services. They have recently submitted their own amendment proposal in Parliament, stipulating fines for unregistered companies shunning taxation. The drivers call for a change in legislation before the end of the current parliamentary term.

"The fare should not be the only decisive factor in selecting a carrier, but also quality," one protester told Polish Radio.

The protest is to last until midday. (aba/rk)
