Record-high donations to Polish non-profits in 2014

Polish taxpayers have earmarked nearly PLN 558 mln (130 mln) for non-profit organisations in 2014 in their 1-percent personal income tax donations, the Finance Ministry has announced.

“A record-high number of Poles, 12.5 million people,” have earmarked a fraction of their tax liability for a registered non-governmental organization of their choice, Paweł Jurek of the Finance Ministry told Polish Radio’s news agency IAR.
A bulk of the contributions have gone towards the treatment of children diagnosed with severe conditions and people with disabilities. The funds are transferred to foundations’ sub-accounts created for individuals, most often kids in need.
The fact that parents often take matters in their own hands, asking for donations for their treatment via foundations “attests to a gap in Poland’s healthcare system,” says Dorota Pieńkowska, member of the Polish-American Community Assistance Fund.
The second-most often supported cause by taxpayers is environment protection. (aba/rk)
