The weeks leading up to the Polish general election on 25 October are not the best time to discuss the immigration crisis in Europe, said Poland’s Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna.

“There are no threats related to the acceptance of refugees in the country, which Poland has committed itself to. But the election campaign is not conducive to holding peaceful talks on this issue,” Minister Schetyna said on Tuesday.

The Polish Foreign Minister admitted that the interest of local governments in hosting refugees is very varied – some are willing and open, and some are still holding back.

“The main thing that we were able to understand was that the concept of voluntary acceptance – no country can be forced to accept a certain number of refugees. And they are free to decide whether, and to what extent they want to help,” Minister Schetyna said.
