The largest military maneuvers in the country this year, held in the Orzysz training ground, northeastern Poland, take in 7,000 troops, 700 tanks and fighting vehicles.

Polish soldiers will be training alongside peers from fellow NATO member states, the United States, Canada, Germany and Britain. Polish reservists and volunteers from the National Reserve Forces are taking part in the operations to boot.

The scenario for the drills, involving both land and air forces, is centered on the protection of natural resources in the event of an international conflict breaking out in the region. The exercises of the allied forces coincide with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and resulting tension with Moscow.

The goal of the troops is to deter aggression and counterattack, equipped with heavy weaponry including Leopard tanks, Rosomak armoured vehicles, Dana self-propelled howitzers and the Langusta self-propelled multiple rocket launcher. The drills will also employ military aircraft and helicopters.

The maneuvers will run until 23 October. (aba)
