“This is where Polish Radio had its beginnings,” said public broadcaster's president Andrzej Siezieniewski during the ceremony at what was once the home of the so-called Polish Radiotechnical Society.

“Here we attempted to catch up with the rest of the world,” Siezieniewski admitted, “because you could already find radios in Eastern Europe.”

Photographs taken by the first assistant to the chairperson, Zofia Sokołowska, and those chosen by historian Maciej Kwiatkowski of the first five years of Polskie Radio are on display at the original location in an exhibition titled “90 years of Polish Radio. Warsaw, 29 Narbutta Street – here it all began”, about two kilometres away from the current broadcasting house.

The first daily, primarily weather, broadcasts began on 1 February 1925 and boasted a few dozen subscribers; a year later there were over 30,000.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of public broadcasting in Poland. (uak/nh/rk)
