Over 36,000 homeless in Poland

The number of people sleeping rough in the country has gone up by 5,500 over the last two years, according to the just-released results of a headcount by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

The outcome of the nationwide biannual probe carried out in January indicates that the majority of homeless live in the central Mazovian province, where the Polish capital Warsaw is located, standing at over 4,000.
The figure is nearly as high in the northern Kujawsko-Pomorskie province, whereas the lowest number of rough sleepers was registered in the eastern Podlasie province – over 700.
Adult males account for the largest group of the homeless, totaling 29,000 nationwide, while women number over 5,000. As the study also finds, there are nearly 2,000 homeless children in Poland. (aba/rk)
