Over 80 stalls have been set up, offering regional souvenirs ranging from folk pottery to sheepskin coats, as well as more modern nicknacks.

Those perusing the stalls will also have ample opportunity to sample hot food, and the local mulled wine (grzaniec galicyjski).

A stage has also been set up, with bands and choirs occasionally performing carols and other festive songs.

On Thursday 3 December, locals and tourists alike will be able to savour the first stage of the time-honoured Christmas Nativity Scenes Competition.

The colourful cribs, which draw on local architecture for inspiration, will be laid at the foot of the Adam Mickiewicz Statue on Thursday morning, from 10:00 am to midday. They will then be whisked away to the city's historical museum, where judges will ultimately pick winners in various categories. (nh/rk)
