The press conference was held following the second sitting of the government, where Szydło presented the outline of the programme.

The 500+ Programme, promised during the campaign by her conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, is aimed at providing financial support to raise children and as well as avoiding a further demographic crisis, the government explained.

After three weeks of inter-ministerial discussions, the legislation is to be submitted for public consultations beginning 21 December.

“We want the [500+ Programme] to be widely consulted, we look forward to every opinion on this programme,” Prime Minister Szydło said.

“[Since] half of all Poles earn PLN 2,200 or less per month, the additional PLN 500 is a significant amount in their budget,” an analyst from the Public Affairs Institute, Dominik Owczarek assessed.

“Despite this being one of the most generous government subsidies, it may not help the decreasing birth rate in Poland,” Owczarek warned.

The 500+ Programme is projected to make its way to Sejm, Poland’s lower house of parliament, on 2 February, 2016. (ua/rg/rk)
