Poland’s science and higher education minister has called for a debate on whether medical degree courses should continue to be free as Polish doctors head abroad for better-paid work.

Jarosław Gowin, who is also a deputy prime minister, told Polish Radio that educating one doctor in a Polish university costs about PLN 500,000 (EUR 110,000).

At the moment Poland is footing the cost of educating medical staff who end up working in much wealthier countries in Western Europe, he said.

Over half of Polish medical university graduates leave for countries like the US, Canada and New Zealand, the Gazeta Polska Codziennie daily reported recently. (pk)
