Polish Defence Minister Antoni Maceriewicz has said that a recent audit in the country's defence sector indicates high levels of corruption, which inhibits the work of the army.

“One of the aspects of the audit involves information about the detection of a broad, really giant network of corrupt politicians, officials, high officials of the Polish state, which has led to a poor condition of the military,” Macierewicz said on Saturday.

“One could say that in such a bad situation which the military has found itself in, it is easy to quickly change something; because even small steps, small achievements, small moves give the impression of a huge difference,” Macierewicz said.

Macierewicz was appointed defence minister following the election victory of Law and Justice (PiS) in the October 2015 general election in Poland. The government has recently marked its first 100 days in office. (rg)
