The body was discovered on Wednesday evening in the town of Mińsk Mazowiecki, central Poland.

According to the tvn24.pl website, the officer had been in charge of issuing security clearances for military companies in order to supply equipment to the Polish army.

Earlier, the RMF radio station reported that the officer had committed suicide.

Defence Ministry spokesman Batłomiej Misiewicz confirmed the discovery of the body on Thursday.

Misiewicz said that the officer had “been on sick leave since April, and had submitted his resignation at the beginning of 2016”.

“The prosecutor’s office will report on the circumstances of his death, after investigating this case,” Misiewicz added.

General Janusz Nosek, who served as the head of the military counterintelligence unit from 2008 to 2013, said that: “I have never had complaints about the work of this officer.”

“His tragedy points to the poor state of this important service,” Nosek told TVN24.pl.

After Law and Justice (PiS) won the general election in October, the new Defence Minister, Antoni Macierewicz, replaced the heads of many mlitary departments with people who have little to no experience in the army.

“Officers, who have a sense of responsibility for the security of the Polish Army, are frustrated and feel helpless,” Nosek added. (rg)
