Polish miner dies in methane explosion

A Polish miner has died following a methane explosion at the Murcki coal mine in Katowice.

On Wednesday, rescuers reached the body of the miner some 400 metres underground. He died as a result of an explosion at the Murcki mine in Katowice, southern Poland.
Based on a preliminary investigation, authorities have concluded that the man died as a result of shock waves following an explosion of methane in the shaft of the mine.
Contact with the 49-year-old miner was lost after the explosion. In order to get to the area of the accident, rescuers had to travel on foot for several kilometres along underground walkways. The body was found in the late afternoon on Wednesday. (rg)
