"Shortly after the competition, Gosia, the mother of little Olek, wrote to me asking for help in saving her son. For almost two years Olek (...) has been struggling with eye cancer,” the Polish athlete wrote on his Facebook profile.

He added: “In Poland there is no longer any chance of saving Olek’s eye. The only chance is treatment in New York. I decided to help Olek and put the medal won in Rio up for auction.”

Małachowski threw a distance of 67.55 metres in Rio, finishing second in the discus, behind Germany's Christoph Harting.
