The 23-year-old was on life-support after an accident in the morning hours of 5 September.

She had been celebrating after winning a bronze medal with the British women’s four at the World University Championships in Poznań.

Ailish Sheehan was a student at the University of London’s Faculty of Design and Environment.

Among those who have extended their sympathies to her family and friends is the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

He said: “It is with great sadness that I have learnt of the death of Ailish Sheehan. A talented rower and student of design, her loss will be felt acutely by her teammates and colleagues. This is a cruel blow for all those who were so impressed by her rowing success.” (mk/pk)
