The accident at the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine owned by copper giant KGHM happened at around 10 pm CET on Friday.

A part of the ceiling at the mine collapsed and the three miners on duty were hit by debris.

At the time of the accident, the men were working on fixing ventilation to the ceiling of the mine.

The condition of the injured miner, who is currently in hospital, is considered to be serious.

The accident brings the death toll at KGHM mines up to six this year alone. One other miner was killed in almost identical circumstances just a few weeks ago, said the PAP news agency.

At the time, the company had announced three days of mourning at all branches of the company.

KGHM is one of the largest copper miners in the world. (rg)
