Grzegorz Kukurowski lost consciousness and died while camping at an altitude of 6,300 meters.

Fellow climber Łukasz Chrzanowski fell and slid several hundred meters into a crevice.

Piotr Pustelnik, president of the Polish Mountaineering Association, said Chrzanowski was still alive when a two-man rescue team reached him.

A helicopter was called out but the climber died before further help arrived.

Pustelnik said both climbers were experienced mountaineers. They were part of an eight-strong Polish expedition scaling the Shivling peak, which is over 6,500 metres high.
