Poland's 'Pro-Life' bill signed into law

A "Pro-life" bill ushering in a government aid programme for families of severely disabled and incurably sick babies was signed into law by Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday.

The government hopes that the programme will offer enough support to families raising disabled children to stop terminations of complicated pregnancies.
"This is another important, pro-family element of the government's work and it should be appreciated," Duda said.
"As the wealth of Poland's state and society increases this programme should be built upon."
The new law includes a one-off PLN 4,000 (EUR 900) payout for women who give birth to a child which is severely disabled or has an incurable terminal illness.
It also provides birth parents, legal guardians and care givers with palliative or rehabilitative care for children with medically certified illnesses, psychological care, cheaper medication, priority access to medical care and help with specific needs such as housing.
The law will come into force on 1 January 2017. (vb/pk)
