The first year of the Law and Justice (PiS) government was “honest, calm and in line with plans”, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said on Monday.

A year after taking office, Szydło told the TVP public broadcaster: “We were able to turn to ordinary people, we managed to show that Poles can live with dignity, can feel safe.”

She added: “For sure we could have done more, but I do not feel we have failed.”

PiS won the October 2015 general election in Poland, returning to government after eight years in opposition.

Szydło said that the PiS government “has done more in a year than the PO and PSL [coalition] in eight years”.

“We were able to turn to ordinary people, we managed to show that Poles can live with dignity, they can feel safe,” Szydło said.

The first year of the PiS government has seen a number of laws and programmes being introduced. The flagship 500+ programme provides families with financial aid for children, while a second programme called "Home+", will provide Poles with affordable housing. The latter programme has been launched, but no homes have yet been built.

The government, working in collaboration with the Polish president, is planning to lower the retirement age for men and women to 65 and 60 years respectively. (rg/pk)
