The man, identified as Piotr C. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was detained by the Military Counterintelligence Service. He has been charged with espionage – willingness to work or gather information for foreign intelligence services.

He had been on the run since mid-August.

If found guilty, Piotr C. could face a prison term of between six months and eight years.

Last year, Polish media reported that an air-force officer suspected of spying had been unmasked.

Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza daily reported that the suspect was a helicopter pilot who served in the 36th Special Air Transport Regiment, and then in the 1st Air Transport Base that replaced it - units responsible for transporting top VIPs.

Gazeta Wyborcza reported that the officer had passed military documents to the Russians. (rg/pk)
