The study, by the Research and Academic Computer Network (NASK), found that that the internet is increasingly becoming the primary means of communication for teenagers.

“For teenagers internet apps such as instant messaging and social networking sites are replacing traditional phones as a means of interaction,” Professor Maciej Tanaś of NASK said.

NASK found that 31.3 percent of teenagers admit to using smartphones for at least fours hours a day. In addition 30 percent of Polish teenagers are always connected to the internet.

Social networking sites are now used every day by over three quarters of Polish teenagers.

The majority of teenagers also use the internet daily for listening to music, streaming films and instant messaging.

Online games are less popular, however, and only a quarter of teenagers play them daily.

Four fifths of Polish teenagers are thought to use the internet on a daily basis to help with school work. The most popular sites to help with work are Google, used by 60 percent of teenagers, and Wikipedia, used by 43.3 percent. (sl/rg)
