High smog levels in central and southern Poland

High levels of smog pollution have been recorded in central and southern Poland, the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) has said.

The Inspectorate said the high smog levels were due to the recent lack of wind and rainfall around the country which “favour the occurrence and persistence of high concentrations of air pollutants.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Inspectorate said that at 11:00 am “the concentration of PM10 particulates in many places, especially southern and central Poland, exceeded 100 micrograms per cubic metre”.
There were also over three dozen locations where the concentration of particulates exceeded 200 micrograms per cubic metre. These included the cities of Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Lublin, and Poznań.
High pollution levels will remain on Thursday, GIOŚ said.
