Following a vote on Thursday, the National Media Council, which oversees Poland’s public broadcasters, appointed Jacek Sobala as Polish Radio chairman for a four-year term.

The move became necessary when former chairwoman Barbara Stanisławczyk submitted her resignation just days following her re-appointment for a second term in mid-February. During a formal competition to select a chairman, Jacek Sobala said that the company needs to “put a premium on content quality, cost-cutting, restructuring as well as improve cooperation with regional radio stations in order to be able to compete with commercial outlets”.

Sobala also said he wanted Polish Radio “to set trends rather than to respond to them”. (mo/rg)
