In the letter, Duda wrote: “congratulations on obtaining the support of most European Union countries to extend your tenure as President of the European Council.

“I hope that in the future it will be able to rebuild European unity based on the principle of equal states and free nations,” the letter read.

During a European summit of heads of states in Brussels, former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk was appointed to head the European Council for a second two-and-a-half year term.

Tusk was supported by 27 of the 28 EU leaders at the summit. Among the prime ministers who supported Tusk’s bid were Hungary’s Viktor Orban and the UK’s Theresa May, both of whom were seen as allies of Poland’s PiS government on the European stage.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło was the only leader out of the 28 at the Brussels summit who voted against Tusk. (rg)
