Firefighters were called out almost 1,000 times over 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday after gales ripped tiles off roofs and snapped trees like matchsticks.

About 22,000 homes had power cut off at one point.

By Sunday morning, the figure was down to 3,000, according to the Government Security Centre.

Forecasters warned that some parts of the country could be buffeted by gusts of up to 80 kph on Sunday.
