In an interview published on Sunday by the Italian La Repubblica daily, Szydło said Poland “will do everything to strengthen the European rules”.

Donald Tusk – a former prime minister of Poland – was recently re-elected to head the European Council for a two-and-a-half year term.

He was supported by all the EU member states except for Poland. Szydło, who attended the meeting in Brussels, was the only one who opposed Tusk's re-election, having earlier put forward an official Polish candidate for the post.

“My objections were not related to Tusk, but to the fact that the country of origin of the candidate should support him, especially if it is for such an important position,” Szydło said.
