On Friday Law and Justice (PiS) MP Jacek Sasin – the initiator of the bill to expand the boundaries of Warsaw to include just under three dozen suburbs – said that the group of MPs behind the bill “took a decision to withdraw" the document.

Sasin said that a lot of questions were raised during public consultations of the bill.

“This also convinced us that this bill should continue to be consulted and discussed,” Sasin said, adding that a letter was sent on Friday to the parliamentary speaker to withdraw the bill.

The plan to triple the size of Warsaw as an administrative unit had been met by criticism from the opposition and Warsaw City Hall.

Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, a deputy leader of the opposition Civic Platform (PO) party, had earlier claimed the bill aimed to allow PiS to take control of the capital – thanks to voters in areas that would be administratively included in Warsaw.

Under the bill, 32 outlying municipalities would have become part of the Warsaw metropolitan area, and would have had a say in selecting the capital’s authorities, including the mayor.
