During the address, President Andrzej Duda said that 2018, marking a century since Poland regained independence, is the best time “to determine the necessary directions of systemic changes to the state.”

“For the first time in history, these directions will be outlined by our entire society,” Duda said in the address televised on the TVP national broadcaster.

Wednesday marked two years since Duda won the presidential election against then-incumbent Bronisław Komorowski.

In early May, Duda said: “Poles have a right to say whether the constitution, which has been in force for 20 years, should be changed.”

He added that Poles themselves should be able to decide on the directions of the country's development. “Which civil rights, which freedoms must be more strongly highlighted,” he said. (rg/pk)
