Lung cancer made up 24 percent of all cancer deaths in Poland, tying the country with Belgium, Denmark, Greece and the Netherlands in second place.

“Across the EU Member States, the share of lung cancer among all fatal cancers was the highest in Hungary (27 percent)”, Eurostat said in a statement.

“At the opposite end of the scale, the lowest shares were recorded in Portugal (15 percent), Latvia, Slovakia and Sweden (all 16 percent) as well as in Lithuania (17 percent).

The agency said that out of the 4.9 million deaths reported in the EU in 2014, a quarter (1.3 million) were due to cancer.

Of those deaths, 272,000 were caused by lung cancer, including cancer of the trachea and bronchus, Eurostat added.

Wednesday marks World No Tobacco Day.
