Hundreds of thousands of believers took to the streets of towns and villages across Poland in religious processions on Thursday as Roman Catholics marked the feast of Corpus Christi.

Some were dressed in traditional folk costumes, adding colour to the traditional processions, held on a day which is a public holiday in Poland.

The feast of Corpus Christi is one of the oldest in the Catholic Church and has been marked since the 13th century.

During Poland’s often-turbulent history, especially when it was under occupation by foreign powers, Corpus Christi processions were strongly patriotic as well as religious in flavour.

Poland regained independence in 1918 after 123 years of partition by the Russian empire, the kingdom of Prussia and the Habsburg empire.
