In a speech in Warsaw full of detailed references to Poland’s often turbulent history, and which also referred to the contemporary fight against terrorism, Trump said: “I am here today not just to visit an old ally but to hold it up as an example for others who seek freedom and who wish to summon the courage and the will to defend our civilisation.”

In a rousing address interrupted by cheers from thousands of listeners, Trump added: “The triumph of the Polish spirit over centuries of hardship gives us all hope for a future in which good conquers evil and peace achieves victory over war.”

He added: “The story of Poland is the story of a people who have never lost hope, who have never been broken and who have never, ever forgotten who they are.”

Trump delivered his address by a monument in central Warsaw to Poles who fought in the bloody 1944 Warsaw Uprising against Nazi German occupation.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said Trump’s speech “proves that Poland is an important country, Poland is a country to be reckoned with.”

Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz summed up Trump’s visit to Warsaw by saying: “This is a remarkable day for Poland and for all of Europe, a beautiful day, a great day, a day on which the Polish-American alliance has been strengthened as never before in the last 200 years.”

Earlier on Thursday, Trump held face-to-face talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda. After concluding his visit to Warsaw, which started on Wednesday evening, Trump headed off to Germany for a G20 summit.
