Polish ruling party consolidates lead despite protests: poll

Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party is backed by 37 percent of voters who say they would take part in parliamentary elections, according to the latest survey by IBRiS.

Support for the party rose by 3 percentage points from a month earlier despite fresh controversy and street protests over PiS-backed court reforms in Poland, the Rzeczpospolita daily, which commissioned the poll, commented.
Meanwhile, the opposition Civic Platform (PO) party, which was ousted from power in 2015 parliamentary elections, is in second place, with 21 percent, 2 percentage points down from June.
The Nowoczesna (Modern) party is third on 9 percent, the anti-establishment Kukiz’15 group is fourth on 8 percent, and the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), which is outside parliament, is fifth, backed by 7 percent, the poll found.
The rural-based Polish People’s Party (PSL) would also make it into the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, on 5 percent.
The poll found no other parties would clear the 5 percent support threshold needed to enter parliament.
The survey was conducted on 18-19 July on a representative sample of 1,100 Polish adults. (str/pk)
