No decision yet to build Poland’s first nuclear power plant: minister

Poland’s energy ministry said on Friday that the country has not yet taken a decision to build its first nuclear power plant.

The Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily, citing "unofficial" sources, reported earlier this week that the government had decided in the last several days to construct a nuclear power station.
The paper added that financing for the project was still an open question.
But Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski said, cited in a statement by his ministry: “No decision has yet been made on this issue."
He added: "I have repeatedly emphasized... that the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland is one of the scenarios for the development of the Polish power industry and the Polish energy mix that we are seriously considering at the energy ministry.”
Tchórzewski said that only two locations are being considered for a nuclear power plant: Lubiatowo-Kopalino and Żarnowiec, both in northern Poland.
Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reported that Poland’s development ministry believes that the best option would be to buy nuclear technology from France.
It added, however, that the energy ministry has pointed to the benefits of using Chinese and South Korean technology.
