Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said regional administrators would have to modernise their warning systems and install back-up generators to keep them running.

Błaszczak added that assessors would be replaced by specially qualified public servants to speed up damage assessment.

Fierce winds and heavy downpour hit northern Poland on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The gales killed at least six people and injured about 50 others while also damaging hundreds of homes and wreaking havoc in forests in Poland's north and west on Friday night and Saturday morning. (vb)
