PM promises higher pay for Poland’s teachers

Their paychecks will increase by 15 percent over the next three years, Szydło said while attending national ceremonies marking the start of the new school year.

The first 5-percent hike will be offered at the beginning of the second quarter of next year, followed by another one on 1 January 2019 and a third one on 1 January 2020, Szydło said during the ceremonies in the village of Dobrzechów in the southeast of the country.

But officials from the Solidarity trade union have said teachers should be given a 15-percent pay raise in a single instalment from January next year. The union has threatened to stage a protest unless the government meets this demand.

Szydło’s government is expected to discuss legislation on financing the country's education system on 12 September. (gs/pk)
