The European Commission’s Wednesday decision to invoke Article 7 of the Treaty of the European Union against Poland is "all about politics, not the rule of law,” Poland’s justice minister has said.

Zbigniew Ziobro also said he accepted the Commission’s decision “with calm.” He added that "Poland is a country that respects the rule of law."

Poland "will play a significant role in Europe and the EU only if it has efficient and well-functioning courts, which is why we must ensure that these courts finally start to work well and [we must] press ahead with [our] reform of the justice system," Ziobro said, as quoted by the country's PAP news agency.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, on Wednesday took the unprecedented step of triggering Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland, stepping up pressure on Warsaw over controversial changes to the judicial system by the country’s ruling conservatives.
