A group spanning government departments has been launched to clamp down on the propagation of fascism and other totalitarian regimes, government spokesperson Joanna Kopcińska has said.

The group will also tackle hate crimes related to ethnicity, nationality, race and religion.

It will include officials from the interior, justice, foreign and culture ministries, alongside the police, border guards, the Internal Security Agency and the national prosecutor’s office.

These departments will be able to contribute to the analysis of existing rules “so as to work out the best solutions to apply in practice,” Kopcińska said in an interview for state broadcaster Polish Radio. The group will also be open to collaboration with civil society organisations advocating human rights.

The project was proposed by Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński.

In January, Brudziński pledged to support efforts to delegalise radical nationalist group Pride and Modernity (Duma i Nowoczesność), which was filmed celebrating Hitler’s birth anniversary in south-western Poland in May 2017.

Propagating fascism or other totalitarian regimes in Poland carries penalties of up to two years in prison. (aba/pk)
