Szumowska was evidently moved at Saturday night’s awards ceremony. She said she was “extremely happy” and stressed that the accolade for the film which, in her view, touches upon important and universal problems, is of particular significance for her.

“Mug” is a modern tale of a man who lost his face in an accident. Having undergone an innovative face transplant, he returns to his home town but nobody knows how to relate to him. He appears to be totally alien in his community.

The main protagonist is portrayed by Mateusz Kościukiewicz, one of Poland’s top young actors, who in 2014 was named one of Europe’s Shooting Stars.

Forty-five-year-old Szumowska is a graduate of the National Film School in Łódź, central Poland. Her previous feature, “Body/Ciało”, received the Silver Bear at the Berlinale film festival in 2015.

Past Silver Bear recipients include Polish directors Krzysztof Kieślowski (1994) and Roman Polanski (2010). (mk/pk)
