Poland’s ruling conservatives with 44% support: poll

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is backed by 44 percent of voters, while opposition groupings trail a long way behind, according to a new poll.

The survey by pollster CBOS found the opposition Civic Platform (PO) party, which headed the previous government, is backed by 14 percent, and the Nowoczesna and Kukiz'15 groupings are joint third on 6 percent.
The rural-based Polish People’s Party (PSL) and the left-wing Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) would also make it into the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, each with 5 percent support, according to the survey. This last party is now outside parliament.
Other parties would not clear the 5 percent threshold needed to make it into the Polish parliament, the poll found.
Backing for PiS increased by 1 percentage point compared with a previous poll last month, while support for the PO fell 3 points to its lowest level since November 2016, CBOS said.
Nowoczesna, a liberal grouping, saw its support inch up by 1 percentage point, while the anti-establishment Kukiz'15 group’s rating slipped by 1 point from February.
The poll was conducted on March 1-8 on a representative sample of 1,092 adults.
