A Polish government spokeswoman on Monday slammed a “ruthless political attack” by a magazine which claimed the prime minister was "juggling his assets around” to hide the extent of his fortune from the public.

Spokeswoman Joanna Kopcińska was responding to a report in Newsweek magazine that PM Mateusz Morawiecki signed over property to his wife twice -- in 2013 and 2015 -- after he received a proposal to enter politics.

Kopcińska said: "This is a ruthless political attack on the prime minister's family. There are no grounds for any doubts" about Morawiecki’s asset declarations.

She insisted that the public has long known what Morawiecki is worth.

Morawiecki was a well-paid banker before entering politics. The ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, meanwhile, has championed the poor and those who have struggled after the country’s transition to a market economy after the collapse of communism in Poland in 1989.

Law and Justice has frequently accused its predecessor in power, the Civic Platform government, of being a self-serving, morally reprehensible clique.

Morawiecki replaced Beata Szydło as prime minister in December, halfway through her government’s term in office.

PiS politicians have said that the change of premier reflected their party’s determination to focus on the economy in the second half of its term.
