Food going to waste is an increasingly significant problem in Europe, Deputy Environment Minister Sławomir Mazurek said at a press conference on Thursday.
He announced a three-year, PLN 11 million (EUR 2.6 million) project that would be run by the Federation of Polish Food Banks, the Environmental Protection Institute, and a number of experts.
The project aims to research food wastage in Poland, educate people about the problem, and propose legal changes to help combat it.
According to Marek Borowski, CEO of the Federation of Polish Food Banks, the average Polish family of four wastes PLN 2,500 worth of food annually.
Around 9 million tonnes of food is wasted across Poland each year, according to European Commission data from 2006, cited by the Polish environment ministry.
